This mural was commissioned in 1970 by Miss Stephanie Shurland, then principal of Bishop Anstey High School (Trinidad).
She asked Ralph to do a large wood carving but he suggested a mosaic mural on which both Vera and he could work. She agreed.

Ralph did the cartoon or drawing on brown paper. Vera made all the pieces of tesserae; fired them, glazed them and put them in place with epoxy. The mural was then grouted.

Ralph made suggestions as the work progressed. It was made in two sections, mounted to the wall and then the last pieces of tesserae were glued to cover the lag bolt heads and the seam so you cannot see where it is joined.

Ralph and Vera felt that the students would relate much better to a black Christ rather than to a Mediterranean Christ.
